The Labmaster LUCIA™ Foal IgG Kit

This quantitative rapid test is intended for measuring IgG antibody levels in newborn foals as an aid in assessing failure of passive transfer of immunity (FPT, FTPI). The test can easily be performed at the stable and it produces a numerical result in 6 minutes.

Test description

The Labmaster LUCIA™ Foal IgG test is an in vitro veterinary diagnostic test for the quantitative determination of determination of Immunoglobulin G (IgG) from foal whole blood to assess failure of transfer of passive immunity (FTPI).

The Labmaster LUCIA™ Foal IgG Kit is to be used with the semi-automated Labmaster LUCIA™ Vet Analyzer.

About the analyte

Newborn foals are entirely dependent on antibodies absorbed following ingestion of mare’s  colostrum for protection against infectious diseases. After 24 hours a foal is considered to have failure of transfer of passive immunity (FTPI), if circulating immunoglobulin levels are less than 400 mg/dl. FTPI occurs in 10 to 20% of newborn foals (i). It is the most common immunodeficiency disorder in horses and associated with an increased risk of infectious disease and mortality, which is why routine monitoring is recommended, to allow early detection and treatment (ii).

"I recommend testing IgG levels in all foals, as external appearance does not indicate antibody levels. Using a Labmaster LUCIA™ VET analyzer, I obtain a quantitative result, especially valuable when IgG levels range from 400-800 mg/dL, helping to determine if plasma is needed on a case-by-case basis."
